"Building Buildings"

Andy Zimmermann

Artist Website

Building Buildings is a video projected, with sound, into a triangular space between two buildings on Harrison Ave. The video is mostly hidden to a viewer standing in the middle of the parking lot but the light flashing on the side of the building and the amplified sound of welding draws the viewer to come toward the space, where the full scene becomes visible. A welder continuously works at this space between two buildings, powerfully constructing an image in the gap.

Andy Zimmermann grew up in West Virginia. He has been exhibiting paintings, and then welded steel sculptures, in such places as the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, the DeCordova Museum Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA, the Cedarhurst Sculpture Park in Mt. Vernon, IL. He has had solo gallery exhibits in Boston and New York City, and has participated in group shows around the U.S. and in Europe. He earned an AB from Harvard College and an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art. In recent years his work has incorporated digital media, including digital photographs on sculpture, and installations using video, animation, and digital sound.
