Light Beams is a series of abstract video art films originally based on footage of video slot machines and rush hour traffic. This most recent project is a visual study of Western civilization dealing with the allure and implications of the consumer society and capitalist culture. This project stems from a constant mixing and recycling of images from various sources and echoes the cycles of consumption at the heart of de Costerd’s conceptual focus: transportation, territory, the built environment, among others. De Costerd’s practice is constantly evolving and pushing boundaries, often making connections with other artists as was the case at Illuminus, where he collaborated with artist Samo to install the sculptural Glitche cube.
Born in Lyon, France, Francois has a Master’s degree in fine arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. With a background in photography and painting, both film masters and painters have influenced his work. Moving across multiple disciplines to produce large scale pieces such as multi-channel video installations, Francois uses tools as varied as digital photography, motion, audio and visual software, to build experiential works. He has shown works at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Museum of Science Boston, the Boston Sculptors Gallery, the Boston Convention Center, Harbor Arts Port Call 2014, Gallery XIV, Axiom gallery, The MIT Museum, Tufts University, Montserrat College of Art's artrageous!, Atlantic Works and performed at First Night Boston, Boston CyberArts and Pixilerations.
